WebJul 13, 2024 · The Charlton 8550 series covered line sizes from 8 to 15, depending on the spool. I know what you mean about the size: the frame with any of the four spools seems quite big. The 8500 1.6 is indeed quite rare, and would be a nice 10-11 reel if you found one. Weight-wise, I’ll bet a 8500 1.6 weighs as much (or more?) than an 8550.

There is an 8350C with a 1/2 spool (little brother to the 8450C) presently going for $1800. I think the 8450C is the best reel for 6 weights and above. For 6 weights and below my pick is the San Miguels.

Especially if using bamboo then the extra weight of the 8500 is not as much of an issue. I did catch lots of Bahamian bonefish on my 8450 7/8, however. Compressor oil is solvent free and is what Jack Charlton recommended for the spindle and spool (but obviously in more sparing amounts).
